OVERVIEW
WHAT IS HADASSAH? Hadassah is the largest women’s Jewish and largest women’s volunteer organization in the US with 300,000 members, associates, and supporters.
HISTORY: Hadassah was founded in 1912 by Henrietta Szold of Baltimore when she observed poor health conditions in pre-state Israel, went home to her women’s study group in New York City, and raised money to send two nurses to serve the people of pre-state Israel. This was the foundation of the health care system of Israel.
HOW WE HELP: Currently, the women of Hadassah own two hospital campuses of the Hadassah Medical Organization, HMO, in Jerusalem, located in Ein Kerem and Mt. Scopus. We also sponsor two Youth Aliyah Villages in the Northern half of Israel, Meir Shfeya and Hadassah Neurim.
In addition, the women of Hadassah educate about Judaism, Israel, and Zionism, advocate on behalf of Israel, women’s issues, especially women’s health, and fighting antisemitism, and finally, Hadassah also offers women leadership opportunities and training.
MISSION
Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization that inspires a passion for and commitment to the land, the people, and the future of Israel. Through education, advocacy, and youth development, and its support of medical care and research at Hadassah Medical Organization, Hadassah enhances the health and lives of people in Israel, the United States and worldwide.
Hadassah’s top three advocacy priorities are support for Israel, fighting antisemitism, and promoting women’s health.
CURRENT INITIATIVES
HOSPITALS: Hadassah’s central foci are the hospitals (HMO). We have two hospital campuses, Ein Kerem and Mt. Scopus.
YOUTH VILLAGES: Central to our mission is the well-being of future generations, and the Hadassah-supported Meir Shfeyah and Neurim Youth Aliyah villages help put these children on a path to success.
YOUNG JUDEA: As strong supporters of Young Judaea, we provide scholarships and opportunities that help ensure their passion for Jewish life and Israel while giving them the tools they need to become strong leaders of tomorrow.
SUPPORT
We are a sisterhood of women that supports women’s empowerment. We are Jewish, though you do not have to be Jewish to be a member, and support the Jewish people. We are Zionist, and support Israel, the Israeli people, and those who care for Israel and its people. We are educated, so we support the ability to educate others. We are people who care, so we support and care for others.
The money given to Hadassah supports all of our programs, starting with the hospitals, the villages, and Young Judaea. They are supporting every single person who works for HMO, from the Director General to the doctors, nurses, and all of the staff. They are supporting all of the students in both of the Youth Aliyah villages and all the adults who support them, including their teachers. They are supporting scholarships for Young Judaea’s camps in the US and Year Course in Israel. Philanthropic support also allows us to be a professional organization and create communities of women who want to support these programs.
