OVERVIEW
WHAT IS HADASSAH? Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc. (HWZOA), is the largest Jewish and Zionist women’s organization in the United States, with 300,000 members and supporters.
Hadassah is lifechanging, for those we heal — and for those who help.
HISTORY: Henrietta Szold founded Hadassah in 1912 after travelling to pre-state Israel and seeing the high infant and maternal mortality rates, as well as the terrible public health conditions impacting the community’s health and welfare. The new organization’s first act: sending two nurses to Jerusalem to start to tackle the problem. Because of Szold’s tenacity and commitment, Hadassah laid the foundation for Israel’s healthcare system and for the Hadassah Medical Organization, a Jerusalem-based hospital system.
MISSION
Today, Hadassah hospitals in Israel provide care for more than 1 million people each year and pioneer medical research that has global impact. HWZOA also support two youth Aliyah villages in Israel that set vulnerable youth on the path to a rewarding future. Hadassah brings women together to drive this lifechanging work and effect change on such critical issues as ensuring a strong US-Israel relationship, combatting antisemitism and advancing women’s health.
CURRENT INITIATIVES
Providing World-class Medical Care. Supported by donors in the US and around the world, Hadassah hospitals are global leaders in medical care, treatments and research, and are known for building bridges to peace through medicine.
Helping Young People Realize Their Potential. Hadassah supports two youth Aliyah villages in Israel that provide teens and pre-teens of all backgrounds with a shelter, education and the care they need to thrive.
Advocating for the Issues We Believe In. Hadassah women advocate to ensure Israel’s security, strengthen the US-Israel relationship, combat antisemitism and advance women’s health.
Reinforcing Our Connection to Israel. At the core of Hadassah’s mission is a dedication to strengthening Zionism, the Jewish people’s bond with and commitment to the land and people of Israel.
Building Community. Hadassah is a diverse community of women of all ages and at all stages of life who connect locally through Hadassah’s hundreds of chapters across the US. Evolve Hadassah communities of younger women and emerging leaders are growing and thriving.
